The Gigalees Crazy Circus Show: Melbourne International Comedy Festival By Simon Baker - CEO of ArtsHub Australia - 17th April, 2009.
My mission was to review the Gigalees show at the Trades Hall New Ballroom for the Melbourne Comedy Festival. Now as a 42-year-old, I was not sure the best way of approaching this. How do I know if this kids' show was any good? What do I look for? Moreover, would I look out of place if I didn't have any kids there with me? Therefore, I decided to take my trump card to the show, my 5-year-old son Liam. If his non-stop giggling and dancing is any indication, then the Gigalees are a hit.
For a full 50 minutes, Wilma & Daisy bring to life a mixture of toe tapping music and circus acrobatics that keep the kids and their chaperones on the edges of their seats. Daisy is the 'smart one' who keeps the show on track while Wilma is the 'mischievous one', telling bum jokes that keep the kids howling with laughter.
The show moves along at a rapid paced with loud music, lots of colour and endless action. The kids and adults are constantly up and down in their seats partaking in the songs and dances and even, from time to time, hauled up on stage to help Daisy and Wilma.
One of the parents described the show as a bit like Benny Hill for kids and in some ways she was right. The show is right out of the 1920's vaudeville with lots of slapstick humour and silly jokes. However, that is what makes this work so well. We forget that sometimes the simplest things in life are often the best.
Neither Liam nor I looked at our watches once during the show and the 50 minutes flew past. Looking around the audience, I reckon all the kids and even the adults had a great time. What made it all the more fun for the kids was that they could meet Daisy & Wilma after the show. |

A great show for kids. Full of colour and music this team have relentless energy (exceptionally handy when dealing with kids). Well thought out, nice harmonies in the songs and some good old clowning around, Daisy and Wilma impress with their acrobatic and juggling skills, get the kids nice and tired with a lot of singing and dancing and keep the jokes coming at a steady pace. I wish I'd taken my nephews, they would've loved it.

This is a colourful, high energy clown show that the
kids will love.
Wilma and Daisy perform all manner of juggling tricks, acrobatics and
balloon sculpting, keeping the kids on the edge of their seats. There are
also some boppy songs to dance along to and great audience interaction.
Good school holiday fun!

The Gigalees Crazy Circus Show: Gigalees Productions Gilded Balloon Teviot - Edinburgh Fringe Festival Multi-talented young Australians Gwen Trimboli and Tiffany Mulcahy bring their children’s comedy show from touring and television down under to a rollicking fringe debut.
As the
ever-bouncy, cleverly-paired characters
Daisy and Wilma, in multi-coloured costumes
and rainbow socks and with a gaudy array of
mini-circus props, they present a
fast-moving – but not too fast-moving –
family fun show which always greatly amuses,
delights and engrosses even the very
youngest in the audience. Both are adept
jugglers with balls and clubs and their solo
and duo juggling acts are engagingly
accompanied by comic patter and slapstick
action, and even one acrobatic sequence.
Gigalees’ songs strike just the right note for the under-tens – Jelly in my Belly is a big hit, while Music makes me Tap is literally an all-singing, all-dancing number, with everyone joining in with great glee. Trimboli’s Daisy leads the comic action with Mulcahy’s Wilma always bumbling along to catch up. Totally professional without being slick, they capture the audience with their zestful, bright and constantly funny show. |

This show is kids’ slapstick humour (rainbows, juggling, fart jokes, balloon animals etc) at its best. My 5yr old absolutely LOVED it, laughing the whole way through, and even my normally hyperactive 2yr old boy sat mesmerised for the entire approx 60 min show.
Adult jokes, lots of audience participation, a really intimate theatre space at NIDA – it was terrific value ($60 for a family of 4) and the performers came outside afterwards for chitchat and photos.
Top act – thoroughly recommended!

The craziest things here are possibly the double-act's outfits, but then the double-act are pretty crazy themselves, in a zany sort of way. This is a brightly coloured, high energy performance in which the pair on stage barely pause for breath; Wilma and Daisy lead their audience enthusiastically through a series of clowning and circus tricks, during the course of almost an hour of classic slapstick, balloon models and juggling. The buffoonery may at times be predictable, but is still funny and gets laughs from parents as well as children. Mind, the dancing only goes well for the kids whose parents also get into the swing. This is a show high on energy, smiles, skill and laughter.
T’was a lovely Sunday morning when the hubby, the kids (5yr/3.5yr old girls) and I trotted off for our first Family Fringe event together and it didn’t disappoint.
The kids laughed, clapped and sang their way through with Daisy and Wilma.
The show was energetic and involved participation by audience members at various times throughout the show. There wasn’t anything amazingly different about it from an adults point of view, but the kids had a great time. They especially liked Wilma’s numerous bottom jokes – always a favourite.
Interestingly they talked about it all afternoon and even re-enacted some of the skits, so obviously it had an impact!
Definitely worth a look.
